He joined the Air Force and was honorably discharged, but also developed an addition to heroin while serving. He was in state and local prisons several times, but was influenced by the books of Robert 'Iceberg Slim' Beck to write urban fiction. He wrote to support his drug addiction, and he and his girlfriend were ultimately shot to death in their apartment.
